Alzheimer's disease is a common form of dementia and is a condition that currently has no cure. However, it is possible to slow the onset or delay the decline of brain function as much as possible.
Dementia negatively affects memory, thinking, and behavior, disrupting daily life. Dementia can be caused by various factors such as brain injuries, diseases, or unknown reasons.
Researchers believe that Alzheimer's disease is caused by genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors that affect the brain. It has been found that genetics may play a significant role in the development of Alzheimer's disease due to a gene called Apolipoprotein E (ApoE).
Alzheimer's disease risk gene testing
It is a DNA test to assess the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease from genetics, allowing individuals to understand their risk before symptoms appear. This is especially important if there is a family history of Alzheimer's disease. Individuals should undergo testing to evaluate their risk level, as genetics is one of the factors that contribute to the development of Alzheimer's disease.
Benefits of Genetic Testing for Alzheimer's Disease Risk
To understand the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease as a guideline for planning self-care prevention and behavior modification to reduce the chances of developing Alzheimer's disease.
Limitations of Genetic Testing for Alzheimer's Disease Risk
The screening test is a risk assessment of the likelihood of developing Alzheimer's disease only; it is not a diagnostic test. The risk of developing Alzheimer's can arise from various factors such as lifestyle, diet, exposure to chemicals, and genetics. Therefore, having low or high risk does not indicate whether one will or will not develop Alzheimer's disease in the future.
